When to walk in Portugal: a season-by-season guide

By Groundlevel Tours editorial team · Updated

Spring and autumn are the sweet spots for walking in Portugal. How the seasons feel on the coast and inland, and what to pack.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is the classic walking season: wildflowers on the cliff tops, green hills inland and mild temperatures for long days on foot.

Expect the occasional shower in March and April. A light waterproof and layers are enough.

Summer (June to August)

Inland Alentejo gets hot in high summer, so walking days start early. The Atlantic coast is cooler and breezier, and sea swims become part of the day.

Book early: coastal guesthouses fill up in July and August.

Autumn (September to November)

The sea is at its warmest in September and the light softens. Autumn is our favourite time for the Rota Vicentina.

Days shorten in November, so stages are planned to finish in daylight.

Winter (December to February)

Winter brings quiet trails and lower prices on the south coast, with more rain and shorter days. Some guesthouses close for the season.
